October Celebration: Head Start Contribution

Head Start began as an American project, which evolved into a great organization that continues to prove its contribution and value to help break the cycle of poverty for families in America. With the commitment of public-school teachers, parents, and valuable community resources, this eight-week summer project that began in1965 has blossomed to become the largest provider of children and families in poverty.

Head Start has celebrated 55 years by providing children of low-income families with comprehensive programming since its inception in 1965. Their value is immeasurable not only to children and families but immensely instrumental to the growth, understanding, and research in early education, psychology, sociology, health, and nutrition.

Head Start Programs have remained committed to their initial purpose to assist families in poverty to a path of self-sufficiency by upgrading their management systems to meet the ever-changing trends in early childhood education, contributing to their fifty-five years of success.

Head Start alums' careers expand across every profession and at every position. Over thirty-seven million children have attended Head Start programs, including business owners, musicians, doctors, scientists, politicians, and educators. Here are a few examples of its alumni:

  • Senator Rev. Raphael Warnock of Georgia

  • Congresswoman Jahana Hayes of Connecticut

  • Actor Danny Glover

  • Comedian Chris Rock

  • NBA basketball player Shaquille O'Neal

  • United States Secretary of Human Services Sylvia Mathews Burwell

  • Anna Maria Chavez, the first Latina CEO of Girl Scouts of the United States

  • Many others
