Ten years ago, Jevonne McRae and Dot Hill became partners in a business venture that would eventually change their lives and their vision of the world.
Determined to make a difference in how young children learn about the world around them, Jevonne and Dot began extensive personal and business travels both in the US and abroad. During these exciting adventures, they interviewed and worked with children, families and educators in China, Haiti, Jamaica, Africa, India, and South America, as well as in rural, urban, and large cities in the US.
Jevonne and Dot started their first business in 1995 in the basement of Dot’s home – a multicultural specific early childhood education company called “Creative Diversity.” Their goal was to locate authentic and realistic resources from around the world to sell to early childhood educators.
The response from national NAEYC conference attendees was overwhelming! The requests for more resources extended the product line from 20 items to over 1,000 in less than a five-year period. After five successful years of growth in direct sales to schools, and with an increase in catalog distribution to 600,000 during this time period, both Jevonne and Dot realized that their attention and time would be more valuable and better spent in the area of design and manufacturing of products to support multicultural education. Thus, Mojo Education was born.
Since it’s inception in 2006, Mojo Education’s philosophy has been to step “outside the box” when developing quality products so that children can see what the world really looks like.
Mojo Education attributes much of its success as a small and growing business to listening to customers, staying abreast of and actively involved in diversity work, and conducting annual interviews with early childhood educators to assess their needs. This input is used to determine product designs each year.
